What We Believe

At Purpose Church, we believe in the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. Our faith is rooted in the Bible, guided by the Holy Spirit, and lived out through love, grace, and truth.

1. God

We believe in one true God who exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator of all things, holy and full of love.

2. Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead. He is the only way to salvation and eternal life.

3. The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit lives in every believer, empowering us to live with boldness, walk in truth, grow in spiritual maturity, and serve others with purpose. He comforts, guides, convicts, and equips us to carry out God’s purpose in the world today.

4. The Bible

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God – perfect, trustworthy, and the final authority in all matters of faith and life.

5. Salvation

We believe salvation is a free gift from God, received by faith in Jesus Christ alone – not by our own efforts. Through repentance and belief, we are forgiven, made new, and given eternal life.

6. The Church

We believe the Church is the body of Christ made up of all believers. We gather to worship, grow in the Word, serve our communities, and live out our faith together.

7. Water Baptism & Communion

We believe in water baptism by immersion as a public declaration of faith in Jesus, and we regularly take communion to remember His sacrifice.

8. Living with Purpose

We believe every person was created on purpose, with a purpose, for God’s purposes. We’re called to love God, love people, and live on mission daily.

9. The Second Coming

We believe Jesus is coming back again – just as He promised. His return will bring justice, restore all things, and usher in eternity. Until that day, we live with urgency and hope, committed to spreading the gospel and living out our faith with purpose.

Church History

Bethel Temple Congregational Holiness Church was organized in 1939.

The first church building was constructed in the early 1940s. The property was sold to the church for $20 and the seller then donated $10 toward the construction of the building. Four other men pledged $10 each. The first building had no electricity. Oil lamps lit the building and a 50-gallon oil drum was converted to a wood heater.

The second church building was constructed on the property in 1952 during the pastorate of Rev. Erford Mote. It was constructed of materials from the first sanctuary that was torn down and recycled into the new building.

In 1972, during the pastorate of Rev. William Turner, the second church building was remodeled and enlarged with educational facilities.

The current sanctuary was added on to the building along with a fellowship hall in 1981 during the pastorate of Rev. Wayne Hicks. In 2014, a Family Life Center was constructed across the street from the sanctuary during the pastorate of Rev. Jonathan Fitzpatrick.

While the leaders, members, and facilities have changed many times since 1939, our purpose remains the same: to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
